Buying a Domain:
What makes a good domain name?
It depends on what your goals are. If you are thinking about buying a domain name as an investment, then certain guidelines apply. The domain extension is arguably the most valuable attribute of the domain - .COMs are still the highest rated domains. Over the past couple of years, popular country extensions such as .CO.UK (United Kingdom), .DE (Germany) and .TV have displaced .NETs and .ORGs in the pecking order. In fact, .CO.UK and .DE rank #2 and #3 respectively in secondary market sales after .COMs.
"Keyword domains" are the best buy from an investment standpoint. Although single-word .COMs reign supreme in terms of value, most, if not all, have been scooped up in the late 1990s. Two-word .COMs fair pretty well as long as the combined words in question are considered to be "keywords" - i.e., words that web surfers are typing in popular search engines like Google and Yahoo. When registering or buying domain names for investment purposes, think "keywords". Keywords = Traffic, and Traffic = Value. Another important attribute to consider is branding value - generic words that are representative of an particular industry are your best bet. Always check for any trademark infrigments however. A domain name that breaches an established trademark has very little value.
If you're registering or buying a domain name for your business, branding becomes as important as traffic potential. The geography of your business will most likely dictate the domain name extension - .COMs are still the most prized after since they're considered to be "global". If your business is based in a particular country, you might want to get a domain with that country's extension. It's important for the domain name to reflect the name or nature of your business. In some cases, you might consider compromising on the extension in favor of the name itself. Always try to keep your domain name short and memorable. Using numbers, abbreviations or hypens/dashes in domain names make them harder to remember, thus decreasing their inherent value.
Why should I buy a premium domain name?
Domain names are like "real estate". Once a domain name is registered, it's "taken" until the owner relinquishes his/her rights to it. Therefore, domain names have inherent value, especially if they are keyword names that get a lot of search traffic. The cost of ownership for a domain name is relatively low, and its resale value may be quite high - making it a very attractive investment. Domain names that have been registered in the late 1990s, especially single-word .COMs can fetch up premiums well into the six figures.
A premium domain name may make the difference between a successful internet venture and one that fails. A catchy, short and memorable domain name can be a powerful branding asset to a business, and is a key element to driving traffic and sales. With more and more businesses popping up on the internet and more people browsing the internet globally everyday, owning a premium domain name can be an asset.
I don't see a listed domain name that I like. Can you help me get it?
Yes! While ImpressiveDomains is committed to building one of the best lists of domain names available for sale in the industry, there may still be some premium domains that you are interested in acquiring but aren't yet listed on our site. Please contact us at and let us know which domain you are targeting and our team of experts will approach the owner on your behalf and make a pitch. We are well versed in the art of negotiation and will do our best to get you the domain name that you want. In fact, we are successful in reaching an agreement 75% of the time!
What is the minimum offer that I can make for a domain name?
Offers must be at least $100 for any domain name. We will not contact the seller for any offer less than $100.
How do I know what size offer to make without paying too much?
Not sure what size offer to make for a domain name? Order our professional domain name appraisal today! For only $15, we will appraise the domain name and give you a range of what this domain is worth on an open market. You can then tailor your offer based on the fair market value of the domain - and not the seller's own asking price. An appraisal can potentially save you thousands.
What are the steps to make an offer on a domain name?
The process to make an offer on a domain name is as follows:
Click on the domain name that you are interested in. You can browse our list of domains by Top Level Domain extensions (under "domain categories" in the navigation section of the page), or by Category.
Enter your bid and click on the "Make an Offer" button. Be sure to make a reasonable offer - low offers have very little chance of capturing the seller's attention and will often be disregarded. ImpressiveDomains will only forward offers deemed "genuine" to the seller.
Enter your personal information and any details or questions that you may have in the "Comments" text box. Be sure to enter your name, phone number and a valid email address. ImpressiveDomains will use your contact information to get in touch with you. Click on the "Make Offer" button to submit your offer.
ImpressiveDomains will contact you to confirm the validity of your offer. Once your offer is confirmed, ImpressiveDomains will present the offer to the Seller.
We will notify you whether the offer has been accepted or rejected within 7-10 business days.
We will present the seller's counter-offer to you if applicable. ImpressiveDomains.com will work with the seller and you to ensure a smooth negotiation process. You can contact us via email at for all correspondence concerning this offer at that point. All emails will be replied to within 48 hours.
Is an asking price for a domain name fixed?
It depends on the seller. ImpressiveDomains does not monitor the asking prices of our domains. Sellers are free to change the asking price of their domain at their sole discretion. In some instances, a seller has determined a minimum price that they would be willing to sell the domain name for. This price however varies by seller. We will only consider reasonable offers before contacting the seller. Use your best judgment when deciding on a proper offer price. Offers are non binding unless a Sales Agreement has been signed by the seller and the buyer. Your offer is only the first step in the negotiation process. ImpressiveDomains will work with the seller and buyer to ensure the final price is fair for both parties.
How long does it take once I make an offer?
Once you submit your first offer, ImpressiveDomains will contact the seller and respond to you within 5-7 business days. Subsequent negotiations will have a turn around time of 48 hours from us.
How do I negotiate an offer?
When you first submit your offer, we will contact the seller. An account manager will contact you within 5-7 business days to notify you that your offer has either been accepted, or that the seller is ready to start negotiations. We will then facilitate the negotiation process, making sure that the final price is agreeable to both parties.
What happens if a sales price cannot be agreed upon?
If that is the case, then the process will be cancelled and both parties will be notified.
How is the ownership of a domain name transferred to me?
We handle the entire process for you. Once you submit an offer, we will work with all parties to ensure a smooth negotiation and transfer process. We are committed to providing you with excellent service.
Selling Your Domain:
How do I list a domain name for sale on the ImpressiveDomains web site?
To list your domain for sale on the ImpressiveDomains web site, you will need to be a member (it costs nothing to be a member). You will need to set up a username and password, and provide us with your name and contact information. Once set up, go to our Members Area by either clicking on the button located at the top right hand corner of the web site, or by clicking on the "List Your Domains" link located in the left navigational pane of the site.
You can enter as many names as you would like to list on the text box presented. Make sure that your domain names are in the "yourdomain.com" format - with no "www" or "http" prefix. You will be required to enter a valid extension for each domain. Each entry must be on a new line - hit the <ENTER> key to create a new line. Domain names must be in lower case, and cannot be greater than 20 characters in length. Names may only contain alphanumeric characters and dashes/hypens.
Next, you will be required to enter a valid asking price for each domain name, and select a category. Your domain will be listed under the category specified. The reserve price for the domain name will be automatically set at 50% of the asking price. Be aware that the reserve price cannot be adjusted upwards once baselined - even if you change the asking price of the domain name at a later date.
If your domain name is a single-word domain, click on the checkbox. All domain names identified as "single-words" will be reviewed by ImpressiveDomains. A single-word domain is a valid dictionary word - it cannot contain hypens, abbreviations or numbers. Exceptions to the rule will only be made for 2 or 3 character names, and for two-word domains that are considered to be "keyword domains" and have very high traffic. There will be no exceptions to the rule.
Domains cost nothing to list, but incur a 10% transfer fee when sold through ImpressiveDomains. All domains have a minimum transfer fee of $50. The transfer fee includes generating offers from buyers, negotiating an agreement, custom contract preparation, handling of the technical logistics of the domain transfer and providing a secure escrow account for the funds. Please be sure to familiarize yourself with the terms and conditions of our User Agreement before proceeding.
If you submitted single-word domains, they will be reviewed by ImpressiveDomains before they're listed to ensure compliance with our strict listing criteria for such domains. Domains that are submitted as single-words but clearly violate our criteria will be denied listing.
Single-word/premium domains will be listed on the ImpressiveDomains web site within 10-15 business days. All other domains are listed immediately on our site.
How do I know what my domain name is worth?
Order a professional domain appraisal today! Our appraisals cost $15 per domain, and may help you save thousands by setting an asking price that reflects the fair market value of your precious asset. Setting an arbitrarily high asking price for a domain name is a big turn-off for buyers - most may not even bother making an offer, thinking that it will be rejected right away if it's not anywhere close to your listed price. Setting a realistic asking price is the first step in selling your domain name.
Does it cost me anything to list with ImpressiveDomains?
Domains cost nothing to list, but incur a 10% transfer fee when sold through ImpressiveDomains. All domains have a minimum transfer fee of $50. The transfer fee includes generating offers from buyers, negotiating an agreement, custom contract preparation, handling of the technical logistics of the domain transfer and providing a secure escrow account for the funds.

How long does it take for my domain to be listed on the ImpressiveDomains web site?
If you submitted single-word domains for listing, they will be reviewed by ImpressiveDomains with 10-15 business days. Only submissions that meet our clearly published criteria will be accepted for listing. Non single-word/premium domains that are submitted as single-words will be rejected.
Non single-word domains will be listed immediately.
What constitutes a single-word/premium domain name?
A single-word domain is a valid dictionary word - it cannot contain hypens, abbreviations or numbers. Exceptions to the rule will only be made for 2 or 3 character names, and for two-word domains that are considered to be "keyword domains" and have very high traffic. There will be no exceptions to the rule.
Do you accept foreign words?
Yes we do! The same rule applies as far as determining whether the word is a single word or not.
How come I see two or three-word domains under the premium category, yet my domain was not selected?
ImpressiveDomains has established a new set of criteria for single-words/premium domains as of March 1st, 2005. There may be a number of two or three-word domain names that are still listed under the single-word/premium category - these domain names have either been "grandfathered in", or are considered to be "keyword" names that have very high traffic.
How do I list my domain name on the ImpressiveDomains home page?
You must select a domain name that is already listed on our site. Please log on to our Members Area, and click on the "feature your domains" link on the left navigational pane of our site. Alternatively, go to the "manage domains" section of the Members Area, and click on the domain name that you would like to feature from your portfolio. You will be presented with a link to feature your domain.
We charge a fee for listing your domain name on our home page. Please visit our Feature page, or email us at for details.
How do I list my domain name on the ImpressiveDomains home page?
We unfortunately do not accept "bundles" via our standard listing mechanism. You may still bundle a number of domains together for sale at one price - be sure to describe your "package" clearly in the description field of the domain name.
Do you review all domain submissions?
All domains indentified as "single-words/premium" will be reviewed by ImpressiveDomains. Only domains that meet our strict set of criteria will be accepted for listing. Non single-word domains that are submitted as single-words will be rejected.
Domain names that are identified as "non single-words" are not reviewed by our staff. We accept all domains under that category, including adult listings.
How do I receive offers on my domain name?
If an offer is made on your domain name, ImpressiveDomains will contact you. We will then facilitate the negotiation process, making sure that the final price is fair for both the buyer and seller.
Am I obligated to accept an offer?
You are obligated to accept any offer that meets or exceeds your reserve price. It's at your discretion to accept offers below your reserve price. ImpressiveDomains will forward all legitimate offers from buyers to you.
How do I transfer my domain name to the buyer?
ImpressiveDomains will ensure a smooth negotiation and transfer process. We will hold the funds in an escrow account until the domain is transferred to the buyer. Then we will disburse the funds to the seller. This ensures a safe transaction for both parties.
Will I be notified if my listing request is denied?
Yes. If you submitted a non single-word domain name as a "single-word/premium" domain, you will receive an email within 10-15 business days notifying you that your listing has been rejected.
Can I change the asking price of my domain name at a later date?
Yes. Go can logon to our Members Area at any time to manage your domain portfolio. You may change the asking price of each domain you have listed with us, as well as select the appropriate category that they need to be listed under.
How is the reserve price of a domain name determined?
The reserve price for a domain name will be baselined at 50% of the original asking price of the domain. If, at a later date, you change the asking price to a greater value, the reserve price of the domain will be left unchanged. However, if you change the asking price to a lower value, the reserve price will be re-baselined at 50% of that asking price. The computed reserve price will be displayed for your review while you change the asking price for a domain.
Can ImpressiveDomains guarantee a quick sale for my domain?
ImpressiveDomains cannot make any guarantee that your domain name will sell quickly, nor that it will sell at all. We are a premium marketplace where buyers and seller interact. ImpressiveDomains receives over 200,000 visits per month, thereby providing your domain name with the targeted exposure that it needs. While we do actively market our domain offerings to our network of investors, we focus our effort exclusively on top single-word domains. Ultimately, for your domain name to sell, somebody must have a need for it. The key to selling a domain is in choosing the right name in the first place, and in setting a fair asking price. Check out our Selling Tips for more details.
What kind of exposure can I expect after I list my domains with ImpressiveDomains?
ImpressiveDomains receives over 200,000 targeted visits per month, thereby providing your domain name with the exposure that it needs. While we do actively market our domain offerings to our network of investors, we focus our effort exclusively on top single-word domains. ImpressiveDomains may from time to time actively market other domains - this is however at our sole discretion.
How come ImpressiveDomains does not list its recent sales?
ImpressiveDomains specializes in six-figure sales. The majority of our buyers are domain investors whom we've built personal relationships with. It's one of our key differentiators with our competitors. Revealing the identity of our investors may actually jeopardize our business model. For that reason, we keep all of our sales private, and are willing to forego any PR benefit as a result.
We will be happy to share some of our recent sales with you. We have client references available upon request. Please send us an email at
Our Escrow Process:
How are funds transferred from the buyer to the seller?
Once a seller has accepted an offer, ImpressiveDomains will act as a trusted third party to handle the exchange of funds and the domain name registration transfer. An account manager will contact both parties to start the process.
Once the appropriate forms have been completed and signed by both parties, the buyer will get up to 5 business days to wire the funds into a ImpressiveDomains escrow account. ImpressiveDomains will confirm the receipt of funds and submit the transfer request to the Registrar of record. The Registrar will begin their regular transfer process - this process will vary by registrar. If you are the seller, you will get an e-mail from your Registrar, the gaining Registrar or both for authorization to transfer. This must be accepted for the transfer to be completed. Once the Registrar completes the transfer and the new Registrant shows in the public WhoIs, ImpressiveDomains will disburse the sale price, minus the transaction fee, to the seller.
What are your transaction fees?
For all domains, the fee is the higher of 10% of the final sale price, or $50.
Escrow fees are charged to the seller.
Can I trust ImpressiveDomains with the money transfer process?
Absolutely. We are in the business of providing a safe and secure market place to assist in the transfer of domain names between parties. Neither the seller or buyer involved in the transaction has to worry about the technical aspect of the deal - we will take care of the logistics.
Is ImpressiveDomains an exclusive broker? Can I list with other brokers or sell the domain name on my own?
No, ImpressiveDomains is not an exclusive broker. You may list your domain names for sale with other brokers as well. If you sell your domain name on your own, or through another broker, there are no transaction fees owed to ImpressiveDomains.
However, for domain names that we plan on actively marketing, we suggest that you list exclusively with ImpressiveDomains to maximize the effectiveness of our effort. It will be counter productive to have a number of brokers approach the same potential buyers - this may actually hurt your prospect for selling the domain at the price that you want.
How does ImpressiveDomains differ from other brokers?
ImpressiveDomains has a unique business model which sets us apart from our competition. We have a team of marketing and web experts who know the domain industry inside and out. ImpressiveDomains has formed strategic partnerships with a large network of domain investors globally - we often tap into that network for our six-figure sales. We have also formed strong alliances with all the major registrars in the industry, thereby guaranteeing quick and smooth transfers and lowering the risk of fraud. When you list your domain at ImpressiveDomains, it doesn't just "sit" on our web site - we typically have a team of marketing experts who actively pursue buyers on your behalf.
ImpressiveDomains focuses on results, not window dressing.
What is active marketing?
If you have a top single-word domain name listed with us, ImpressiveDomains will proactively seek buyers on your behalf. We will tap into our network of investors to gauge interest, as well as approach all the major players in the relevant industry to pitch your domain. ImpressiveDomains has expertise in dealing with senior executives at major corporations - our goal is to reach the decision makers in those companies to pitch your domain.

ImpressiveDomains has developed a proprietary appraisal methodology to determine the fair market value of a domain name. Our professional domain appraisals cost $15 per domain name, and take up to 5 business days to complete. We factor in numerous criteria in evaluating a domain name, from traffic estimates and general attributes of the domain, to branding potential, marketability, and descriptiveness. Our results are then seeded based on recent comparable sales in the domain industry.
A domain appraisal is essential in determining the market value of a domain name. From a buyer's perspective, it may mean saving thousands of dollars by not overbidding.
